It’s A Normal Thing To Fall In Love With Movie Stars: Gracie Abrams Set To Make Her Acting Debut in Upcoming A24 Film
By Kayla Harper
Last week it was disclosed that singer/songwriter Gracie Abrams would be taking a lead role in director Halina Reijn’s upcoming A24 film, Please. Reijn’s been involved in various facets of the film industry -writing, directing and acting- however she is best known for her work directing 2024’s erotic thriller Babygirl (A24), and will be writing and directing Please alongside David Hinojosa.
Aside from Abrams’s current boyfriend, Paul Mescal being an actor, Abrams has familial connections in the film industry, with her father J.J. Abrams being a filmmaker, and co-CEO alongside his wife and Abrams’ mother, Katie McGrath, of Bad Robot Productions. Despite the industry’s prominence in Abrams’ life, taking on a lead role is still a surprising move from the shy singer, who has only just started to get comfortable performing on a stage in front of thousands of fans every night.
Abrams has carved out a space for herself in the alternative, sad-girl-pop genre, with two EP’s (Minor and This is what it feels like), and two albums (Good Riddance and The Secret Of Us) under her belt, establishing her vulnerable, blunt lyrical style. Defined by acoustic guitars, bedroom pop synths and soft, whispery vocals. Her musical success is a result of the close relationship she established with her fans long before the release of her first single, “Mean It” (2020), and was only enhanced after opening for various shows on Taylor Swift’s Eras Tour in 2023-2024.
Further details regarding the plot of the storyline have yet to be disclosed, so, it will be interesting to see what kind of role Abrams takes on.
